cargo letter five
Dear Susan,

Dissention has struck our party.  David and Josh both believe we
would be better off abandoning the village, and requesting Frith that
we be allowed to stay in his halo.  My view is that even if he accepted
this proposal, and I am doubtful that he would—the natives would think
of us as desperate for protection, as if we needed Frith, the great
white man, to keep us from the squalor of the natives.  I am unafraid, I
told them.  In addition, as Frith was saying, we are essentially seen as
harbingers of good.  This seems to be our key bargaining position.
They want to treat us well, so they can receive their bounty.  Plus, we
also don’t know all the variables yet.

We spent the greater part of today deep in discussion, as the Melani
fed us and attended to our needs.  Rain fell for the majority of this day,
and we found ourselves easily spooked by the slightest sound.  I long
for the slant of clear American sunshine through our living room
window.  I miss the scent of your perfume on the back of my hand, and
the sounds of our children playing in the background.  Movies.

                                                            Love,

                                                            Charles
